Yellow River Iron Bridge, also known as Zhongshan Bridge, situated at the foot of Bai Ta Mountain and in front of Jin Cheng Pass in Lanzhou city. Before 1909, crossing the Yellow River in Lanzhou meant risking your life on flimsy pontoon bridges, dismantled each winter and washed away by floods each summer. Then came the historic bridge in Lanzhou—Zhongshan Iron Bridge.
Stretching 233.5 meters long, it became the first bridge over Yellow River China had ever built as a permanent crossing. For the first time, people could cross safely year-round. Today, this century-old structure is a beloved Lanzhou landmark, a pedestrian-only national heritage site where visitors walk through history while the Yellow River roars beneath.

History of Zhongshan Bridge in Lanzhou: The German-Built Iron Bridge That Connected a Nation
Before the iron bridge was built, a pontoon bridge was constructed here in 1372. For over 500 years, this pontoon bridge was the only Silk Road transportation rout in Lanzhou, but it was repeatedly destroyed by floods and ice. In 1907, Qing Dynasty officials proposed a permanent solution. With Germany’s assistance, every component from rivets to beams was shipped from Germany and transported by land. The bridge opened on 19 August 1909.
In 1942, it was renamed Zhongshan Bridge in honour of Sun Yat-sen, and in 1954 a steel arch was added. Originally bright red, it was repainted dark gray during the Second Sino-Japanese War to avoid bombing — a colour that has been retained to this day. Vehicular traffic was stopped in 2013, and it has now become a pedestrian heritage site and one of the Yellow River cultural landmarks. Locals say: “Zhongshan Bridge came first, and then Lanzhou City.”

Walk Across the “First Bridge over the Yellow River”
The simplest and best way to experience the beauty of this bridge is on foot. Your walking journey begins at the southern end near Jinchengguan, heading north across a span of 233 meters. You can feel the steel beneath your feet and watch the muddy-yellow water swirl below. The five steel arches on the bridge frame the river like a series of gateways, each offering a slightly different viewpoint.
Midway across the bridge, pay attention to the large stele standing on the stone turtle—the inscription reads “First Bridge of the Yellow River”. This is a popular photo spot.
Ride a Traditional Sheepskin Raft
This is definitely one of the top things to do in Lanzhou. For CNY 100 at the Yellow River Mother Wharf, you can experience the local sheepskin raft drifting—a floating platform made by tying inflated sheepskins together. This ancient river transport can be traced back several centuries and was once the main way to tour the Yellow River.
Although the ride is short (10-15 minutes), it is extremely thrilling; you will be jolted along by the current with the iron bridge hanging high above your head.
Visit Yellow River Bridge at Night
If you only have time for one visit the bridge during you Gansu tour, make it after dark. Zhongshan Bridge during the day is completely different from Zhongshan Bridge at night. You can come to the bridge at dusk and take photos at the southern arch of the bridge, capturing Bai Ta Hill and the Yellow River together under the sunset.
After 19:30 in the evening, the bridge will light up in blue, making it impossible to take your eyes off it.
