Badain Jaran Desert: China’s Remote Desert Wonder

Hot China City Tours
China has famous deserts like the Taklamakan and the Tengger, but the Badain Jaran Desert is the one to go for. It sits past Zhangye and Jiayuguan on a China Silk Road tour, and fewer people make the effort, so it stays quiet. The drive is rough, yet the reward is clear lakes tucked between very tall dunes, with the odd small temple nearby and long stretches of real stillness.

Highlight Attractions in Badain Jaran Desert
Bilutu Peak: the "Everest of Deserts"
Badain Jaran is one of the most beautiful places in China, and Bilutu Peak is one of the desert’s “Five Wonders”, rising to 1,611.09 meters with a relative height of more than 500 meters. Locals often call it the “Everest of the Desert.” From the top, you can catch the amazing views of the Badain Jaran Desert’s towers of sand and lakes, where golden dunes fall away in waves and wind-cut ridges change by the minute.
The Singing Sands
Badain Jaran Desert of Inner Mongolia is home to the famous singing dunes, and the sound is strangely addictive. Around Badain Lake, some dunes boom as the sand slides, deep and low like far-off thunder or an orchestral sound, unlike the Singing Sand Dunes in Dunhuang. Due to this, Badain Jaran is nicknamed “the kingdom of singing sands”.
144 Unexpected Oases and Pink Lakes
Different from Dunhuang or Turpan’s deserts, Badain Jaran hides 144 lakes among its dunes, including both freshwater and salty ones. Some lakes are blue or green, and others turn pink or red because of minerals and algae. Honghaizi is one of the most famous Badain Jaran Desert lakes, while Nuoertu Lake feels fresher, where clear water meets green plants right beside the dunes.
Badain Jaran Monastery
Deep inside the dunes, Badain Jaran Monastery sits beside Miaohaizi Lake, with white walls, golden roofs, and sand hills rising behind it. This 300-year-old Tibetan Buddhist temple is often called the “Desert Potala Palace.” Beside the lake, its old murals and Han-Tibetan details add a quiet cultural stop to your Badain Jaran Desert tour.
108 Miracle Springs of Yinderitu
Yinderitu Lake sits west of Bilutu Peak, and at first glance, it is just another salty desert lake. Amazingly, on a tiny island of less than 3 sq km, 108 clear springs bubble through stones or rise straight from the ground. The water tastes fresh and sweet, which makes this place feel unreal in such a dry desert.

Unique Experiences in Badain Jaran: Things to Do
Sandboarding Down Mega-Dunes
Sandboarding turns Badain Jaran’s sand dunes into a natural playground. You can climb a steep sand slope, sit on the board, and slide straight down with wind in your ears and sand flying everywhere. It is a simple yet ridiculously fun desert adventure tour in China, especially after a 4x4 dune ride.
Traditional Camel Riding
Camel riding slows this Inner Mongolia desert down in the best way. A short ride usually takes 1 to 2 hours, following a small camel caravan across the Badain Jaran Desert’s rolling sand sea. The gentle pace allows you to watch the dune lines, hear the bells, and take in the wide silence.
Desert Camping & Stargazing
Camping in the desert and falling asleep to the soft wind must be an unforgettable memory. There is almost no light around, so once the sky clears, the stars fill in fast. The Milky Way is easy to spot, and even basic photos turn out sharp without much effort.
How to Explore Badain Jaran Sand Dunes
1. 4x4 Off-Road Jeep Safari
Badain Jaran Desert is not a place for normal self-driving. The deep desert has no clear roads, and dunes that can trap a car quickly. To reach the lakes, temples, and high sand peaks, travelers usually book a 4x4 off-road Badain Jaran jeep tour with an experienced desert driver.
2. Explore with a Guided Tour
Exploring with a guided tour makes the trip much smoother, especially for first-time visitors. The desert is vast and easy to get lost in, so having someone who knows the routes helps. It also saves time and avoids unnecessary detours.
3. Desert Hiking after Entering the Desert
After the jeep brings you into the desert, the pace can slow down for a perfect Badain Jaran Desert hiking in China. It allows you to hike up the higher dunes for wider views and take stunning pictures while exploring.
